In a press conference in the childcare center at Mount Saint Vincent University, Premier Iain Rankin announced a $40 million investment into affordable and equitable childcare. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joined the conference via Zoom to pledge a further $605 million federal government funding. The goal of this investment is to cut the cost of childcare in half by next year and done to $10 per day for most people within five years.
The funding will be used to create up to 9,500 new childcare spaces, as well as a new early learning program for children over the age of 3.
The goal of $10 per day would reduce childcare expenses by over 1/3rd for the average family. For low income workers, the overall cost could be lower, depending on their income.
